Before monotheism, religion was due to superstition and the need to understand certain questions about our lives and nature. As thinking Man became more articulate, his intelect alowed him to see that the many artificial heathen gods did not work as they were supposed to and that they should be replaced by an unknown single god which takes no earthly form and exists in our imagination. This was an act of logic, and it became possible to argue about the existance of this god on philosophical grounds.

The history of our relation to this god and the relevation of his nature allowed religion to develop along lines which are still with us today. However, not evetybody is willing to accept the logical side and our heathen nature is not completely satisfied. Consequently some of the earlier kinds of religious expression are often combined with the monotheistic religions.
